Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) is often the root cause for women who struggle with urinary symptoms during perimenopause, after menopuase or hysterectomy. With the loss of estrogen, the protective mucous membrane (aka GAG layer) in the bladder and urethra thins, allowing urine to enter and irritate the bladder and urethral wall. Those familiar symptoms of frequency, urgency, pressure and pain can occur. This is not a disease. It is simply estrogen atrophy.
