Editorial - Whyย Bladder Therapies Often Don't Work
In 2026, our approach to IC has been transformed for the better. With phenotyping, we can more easily identify the underlying cause of our symptoms, which leads to better and more effective treatment. That said, some patients may not fit easily into these distinct groups. There are a lot of conditions that can mimic IC. In this issue, we focus on several conditions that are often missed in the IC diagnostic workup.ย Case Study: An Unusual Connection Between Migraines, Vulvodynia, IC and Cognitive Decline: Pelvic Blood Supply Our first case study shares the story of a patient who had horrific migraines, pelvic pain, pain with intimacy, anxiety and depression. But then she started struggling with her memory and what appeared to be cognitive decline. Dozens of doctors missed the underlying cause of her symptoms. A varicose vein on her vulva led to her eventual cure.ยLyme Disease and Interstitial Cystitis
If youโve been bitten by a tick and developed Lyme disease, you, too, may struggle with urinary symptoms. We share the story of one of our members whose IC symptoms eventually improved when her Lyme disease was treated.ย New Study Links Prolapse with IC Symptomsย The pelvis is a small, confined space with little room to spare. But, whenย muscles weaken, organs can fall out of place, resulting in a prolapse. Yes, this too can mimic IC. The good news is that when the prolapse is repaired, urinary symptoms often improve dramatically. Understanding Lichen Sclerosus The quality and health of your skin matter. Lichen sclerosus is rarely discussed but frequently encountered among IC patients. This autoimmune condition can affect both men and women, causing agonizing pelvic pain and urinary symptoms.ย The Evolution of IC/BPS Phenotyping There has been considerable debate about IC/BPS phenotypes in the last ten years but every IC researcher now agrees that there are distinct patient groups, each with their unique treatment strategies. In this article we review the history of the different systems proposed, as well as a new system released last year produced by an international group of IC experts.ย Furthering IC Research If we are to advance IC research throughout the world and truly work as a team, we need consensus on key points about IC. A 2025 meeting has begun this vital, foundational work.ยFeature Story - IC/BPS Myths & Facts:ย Busting the Misconceptions That Keepย Patients Hurting
Stacey Shannon busts the misconceptions that have kept so many patientsย confused and in distress. No, my friends, IC is not just a bladder infection nor isย it all in your head.
IC Flare Survival Kitย
We can do our best to avoid flares with diet, medications and supplements, but sometimes they are just plain unavoidable. Having an IC flare survival kit at the ready can make those hard-hitting flares just a bit more manageable. Sometimes it really is the small stuff that makes a big difference when we arenโt feeling well.ย Self-Help Tip: Starting A New Year When Youโre Already Exhausted Letโs start the New Year Right with strategies for maintaining a calm, stress-free state of mind. God knows, weโre all struggling right now with unusually high levels of stress and exhaustion.ย The Battle of Recurring UTIs The founders of the Femetry line of products contributed to an article on how to battle recurring UTIs and how you can help to prevent future infections.ย Old Fashioned Comfort Food Itโs been an absolutely wicked cold and flu season. In my family, weโre now in round two of influenza. I canโt remember a season this bad. So, I thought Iโd share two of our most comforting chicken recipes, great for cold winter days or anyone struggling with the sniffles! Overcoming Fear of the IC Diet When flares come on suddenly, often after eating a food that you thought was safe, itโs only natural to become confused, if not, fearful of your next meal. Stacey Shannon shares a fabulous article on how to navigate the IC diet and find foods that should not trigger flares.ย Pages:ย 36 Publisher: Interstitial Cystitis NetworkProduct Reviews
